Welcome to France: Your First Administrative Steps
Before You Start
☐Gather your key documents before any appointment: passport, visa, proof of address, employment contract or proof of income
☐Get 5–10 certified copies of important documents translated by a sworn translator (traducteur assermenté)
☐Download the Ameli app and the impots.gouv.fr app on your phone
Open a French Bank Account
☐Choose a bank: traditional (BNP, Société Générale, Crédit Agricole) or online (Boursorama, Hello Bank, N26 — easier for expats)
☐Prepare required documents: passport, proof of French address, proof of income or employment
☐Submit your application in-branch or online
☐Receive your RIB (Relevé d'Identité Bancaire) — this is your bank details reference for all French admin
☐Set up your French phone number if you don't have one yet
Register for Social Security (Numéro de Sécurité Sociale)
☐Go to ameli.fr and click "Accéder à mon espace" →
☐Fill in the online form with your personal details and upload your documents
☐Wait for your temporary number (numéro provisoire) by post
☐Keep the confirmation letter safe
Register with Assurance Maladie (CPAM)
☐Locate your local CPAM office at amelipro.fr or via the Ameli app
☐Book an appointment or submit your file by post
☐Documents required: passport, proof of address, RIB, birth certificate (translated), employment contract or residence permit
☐Once registered, activate your Ameli online account to track reimbursements and download your attestation de droits
Obtain Your Carte Vitale
☐After your CPAM registration is processed, request your Carte Vitale online via Ameli
☐Carry the Carte Vitale to every medical appointment for automatic reimbursement processing
