French Pharmacy & Doctor: How It Works
Finding a Doctor (Médecin Traitant)
☐Register a médecin traitant (your designated GP) — required to get full reimbursement for specialist visits
☐Use Doctolib (doctolib.fr) or Ameli's "find a doctor" tool to search for a GP accepting new patients
☐Book your first appointment online or by phone
☐Bring your Carte Vitale and a valid ID to every appointment
☐At the first visit, ask the doctor to register as your médecin traitant on your Ameli file
Understanding the Secteur System
☐Secteur 1: fees set by the government, maximum reimbursement from Assurance Maladie
☐Secteur 2: doctors may charge above official rates (dépassements d'honoraires) — partially covered by complementary insurance (mutuelle)
☐Secteur 3: no convention with Assurance Maladie — very low reimbursement, avoid unless necessary
Using Doctolib for Appointments
☐Go to doctolib.fr or open the Doctolib app
☐Search by specialty, location, and availability
☐Select a slot and confirm with your phone number and email
☐You will receive an SMS reminder 24–48 hours before
Your First Pharmacy Visit
☐Bring your prescription (ordonnance) from the doctor
☐Bring your Carte Vitale for automatic reimbursement processing
☐The pharmacist will scan your Carte Vitale and bill Assurance Maladie directly
☐Pay only the ticket modérateur (your share, usually 30–35% of the regulated price)
☐Ask for a generic substitute (médicament générique) if cost is a concern — same effect, lower price
Getting a Mutuelle (Complementary Health Insurance)
☐Check if your employer provides a mutuelle — it is legally mandatory for most private sector employers to offer one
☐If self-employed or not covered: compare plans on mutuelle comparison sites
☐Aim for a plan covering Secteur 2 dépassements if you plan to see specialists
